Court strips Ibinabo Fiberesima off her position as AGN president

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos yesterday, stripped Ibunabo Fiberesima off her position as the president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN. Ibinabo is facing a 5 year prison term for accidentally killing Dr. Giwa Suraj in a car accident.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of AGN, Femi Durojaiye, the actress who is the current president will step down while Emeka Ike takes over as the new president.

The statement released:
“The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, this morning 23/3/2016 at the application and argument of Counsel to Actors Guild of Nigeria, Barr. Peter Andor Oboyi, struck out Ibinabo’s and BOT suit challenging the nullification of her election to the Presidency of AGN and also challenging the legitimacy of the Presidency of Emeka Ike and his Exco. The implication of this judgement is that Engr. Emeka Ike led Exco remain the only authentic and lawful leaders of Actors Guild of Nigeria,"
"The Honourable Court vehemently reiterated the position of the judicial authority that, Ibinabo, her purported exco members and the Board of Trustees vacate forthwith the office of AGN both at the National and State level and accordingly surrender all AGN assets at their unlawful possession to the incumbent Engr Emeka Ike’s Government.”

Brussels Attacks: What Happened, In Photos And Maps

"What we feared has happened," said Charles Michel, the Belgian prime minister, followingTuesday's back-to-back attacks in Brussels, his country's capital. The Paris terrorist attacks of last November were rooted in this city. A manhunt for Paris suspect Salah Abdeslam had finally ended in his arrest Friday by Brussels police. But on Tuesday, Belgium took a direct hit.

The attacks began just northeast of the city, at the international airport in Zaventem. About 8 a.m., two blasts detonated in the departures terminal, filled with travelers from around the world on the move during a busy Easter week. Within seconds, at least a dozen of them lay dead; hundreds of others bled from injuries. Windows shattered and blew out; sections of the ceiling collapsed. Smoke filled the air.

Police tried to impose order and directed survivors to safety. Hundreds of passengers emerged, terrified and bewildered, bundled in jackets and coats. Many were loaded onto buses; others dragged wheelie bags along the streets and comforted one another as they contemplated where to go next. The day was just beginning.

It didn't take long — about an hour — for the next attacker or attackers to strike, this time at the city's heart. Shortly after 9 a.m., a blast took place on a train approaching the Maelbeek metro station, smack in the middle of the subway network, the stop nearest the city's halls of highest power. Brussels isn't just Belgium's capital, it's also the capital of Europe, home to the European Parliament, the European Union and all its associated offices. Maelbeek is the stop used by those who work at or visit these institutions and offices. "Terrorists struck Brussels," French President Francois Hollande said, "but it was Europe that was targeted."
Some of the passengers who survived fled the darkened subway car onto the tracks. Above ground, emergency workers converged, blockaded the area, carried out the dead and wounded and helped the rest to safety. Forensics experts took over. At least 20 people had died.

Three possible suspects in the attacks — which were claimed later in the day by ISIS, praising its "fighters" – appeared in a Brussels airport surveillance image from Tuesday morning. Police asked for the public's help in identifying them. The man in the hat is of particular interest, believed to be the lone survivor of the three.

By late morning and through late afternoon, the city was strangely quiet. The Maelbeek stop was shuttered. The metro system was closed, along with the city's airports and train stations. Soldiers patrolled the streets. When the Gare du Nord railway station reopened at 4 p.m., the trains ran smoothly, but full-body searches were underway for passengers. Children, finally allowed to leave school, returned home. In the early evening, Belgium's King Philippe made a rare address to his country's 11 million people, calling the attacks "cowardly and odious."

The city's central square, the Grand Place, two stops from Maelbeek and usually thronged with people, was largely deserted.

By nightfall, people had gathered in various parts of the city with candles, flowers, national flags — all the elements necessary for impromptu tributes to victims and survivors of tragedy, a tradition in Europe that's become all too familiar.
But it will never be normal.

UEFA Champions League Draw | Barcelona draw Atletico

The quarter-final draw for the last eight in the UEFA Champions League held on Friday, in Nyon, with the pick of a quarter-final clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
With no teams seeded and clubs from the same national association drawn against each other, Wolfsburg were first out of the pot followed by Real Madrid. Bayern Munich against Benfica soon followed. PSG picked the only remaining English team, Manchester City, after knocking Chelsea out in the last round.
Before the draws, Lionel Messi said the team were not thinking of unbeaten runs but winning titles.
“We don’t think about the [38-game] unbeaten run [in all competitions], or talk about it either,” he said.
“What we want are titles. They are what count. If we can beat these records as well, then so much the better, but they don’t count for anything if you don’t win trophies too.”
In Atletico, they will face a stiff test as Diego Simeone has moulded a team that does not concede goals easily.
Also, Luis Enrique subtly boasted before the draws that the only team he did not want to play was Barcelona.
He said, “I’ll be happy whoever we get in the quarter-finals, the only team I wouldn’t want to draw is Barça and we can’t get them,” he added.
The first legs will be on April 5, 6 with second legs on April 12 and 13 while draws for the semi-final matches will take place on April 15. The final is at the San Siro on Saturday, May 28.

Defective Lekki Gardens buildings in Lagos to be demolished - Gov. Ambode...urges occupants to vacate premises

Read the press statement from Lagos state government below...
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday directed that stability test be conducted on all building constructed by the Lekki Gardens to ascertain their structural integrity, saying that any building found to be defective will be demolished.

The Governor who addressed Government House Correspondents at the Lagos House, Ikeja, shortly after inspecting the site of the collapsed building which was under construction by the Lekki Gardens, said the incident which claimed 34 lives and left several others injured was “one building collapse too many”.

He said since the unfortunate incident the state government has taken several steps to stem the tide of building collapse, saying that his administration is determined not to fail in the responsibility of ensuring the safety of lives and property of its citizens.

“The State Government will undertake a stability test on all other buildings constructed by the Developer in the State, whether occupied or not, to ascertain their structural stability. The Developer will pay the cost of the tests.  Any building found to be defective would be demolished.  For those that pass the integrity test the developer will pay a penalty for any overdevelopment on the site,” he said.

Governor Ambode who commiserated with those who suffered loss and injury as a result of the building collapse said since the incident, the state government has ordered the immediate sealing of the construction site and cessation of further construction, co-ordinated emergency rescue of all injured victims and treatment at its hospitals, prosecution of owners of the collapsed building as well as dismissal of some government officials.

He said that the government going forward will carry out an audit of all structures in the state to ascertain those with planning approval or not and evaluate the physical development against the approved building plans, saying that details of the plan will be made public soon.

“I want to assure you that there will no longer be any sacred cows. If there is failure of duty, there will be sanctions.

“I also want to seize this opportunity to assure Lagosians that the State Government will do everything within its powers to check the excesses of Developers who flout its regulations and will restore efficiency and confidence in the building control and supervision process,” the Governor said.

To this end, Governor Ambode also revealed that a five man committee to examine the Urban and Regional Planning Law of the State as it affects the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

The Committee is to be chaired by TPL (Dr) Moses Olubunmi Ajayi, a past President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, while members include Engineer Ore Fadayomi, President of the Nigerian Institute of Structural engineers, Architect (Mrs) Yetunde O. Ajayi, a retired Permanent Secretary, General Manager of Lagos State Planning Authority(LASSPA) and Secretary of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) as Secretary of the Committee.

Governor Ambode also charged the committee to examine the operations of LASBCA and make recommendations for changes that will ensure effective service delivery, recommend organizational re-structure and appropriate manpower for effective operation of LASBCA, study the legal and operational issues affecting the functioning of the Materials Testing Laboratory and other matters that will enhance the efficient functioning of the two organizations.

He gave the committee four weeks to submit its report.

“Finally, let me reiterate that Lagos is open to business for those who must comply with the State laws and regulations in order to prosper. Our main concern is to continue to improve on the ease of doing business and uphold the Rule of Law at all times. Those who choose non-compliance and defiance will henceforth face the full weight of the law without fear or favour”, Governor Ambode said.

Speaking to journalists at the site of the collapsed building, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Wasiu Anifowose, said Governor Ambode and his team were at the site to personally examine the level of damage and the determine how best to prevent a reoccurrence going forward.

He disclosed that integrity test would be conducted on all the structures erected by Lekki Gardens in the area, and advised occupiers of other structures constructed by Lekki Gardens to vacate the buildings immediately.

Anifowose said the site of the collapsed structure had been condoned off and that government would take appropriate steps after the conclusion of investigation by the police.

“In the best interest of the occupiers of the other structures, their lives are very important to us as a government and we are appealing to them to vacate the buildings immediately until investigations are completed.

“The gentleman behind Lekki Gardens got approval for ground, first, second and third floors, but after doing the roofing, he removed it and added additional two floors which caused the building to collapse. So, we have to carry out integrity test on the other structures and the cost implication for present occupiers of the other structures to vacate the buildings would be borne by the developer,” Anifowose said.
